The Silver Age Superman Was Way More Powerful Than You Thought

The other day, I came across this in the Superman Encyclopedia.

It was in the entry for Mr. Mxyzptlk:

“….. And in February 1961, after inhaling a cloud of the mischievous imp’s ”magical sneezing powder,“ Superman unleashes a gargantuan ”super-sneeze“ that literally destroys ”a distant solar system.” …… (Action no. 273)

Not having ever heard of this story, you might be wondering like I did…….

  • Was the solar system inhabited?
  • Did anyone die?
  • Did the solar system come back after Mr. Mxyzptlk returned to his dimension?

If it didn’t come back and people died, this is bigger than Dark Phoenix destroying a planet of intelligent asparagus!

But not to worry, Superman had that part under control.

Action Comics 273 - Superman destroys a solar system

This still leaves the fact that as powerful as the Silver Age Superman was, this is CRAZY POWERFUL!

Who could touch this power level? The Spectre? Mr. Mxyzptlk? Other Kryptonians and Daxamites, I suppose. Certainly not Darkseid or any of the New Gods.

And if I understand right, this story is back in continuity because of Convergence!

So the current DCU includes a version of Superman this powerful.*

(*Potentially subject to change when the universe reboots again during the announced “Rebirth”.)

(BTW, that image is courtesy of Mike S! I still haven’t read the story.)
